Rufus Harper, operations director, Agellus Hotels


Rufus Harper’s experience in hospitality has been solely with the Agellus Hotels brand. A brand that has been slowly but surely gaining momentum over the past decade, growing from one Suffolk inn to a portfolio of five properties in East Anglia, including the boutique jewel in the crown Tuddenham Mill.

Harper joined 11 years ago, having worked with owner Mark Harrod previously in the food and supermarket industry, where Harper learnt the ropes of good business and the importance of margins. When the hospitality side of the Agellus Hotels was three properties strong, Harper was given the chance to transfer his skills and jumped at the chance.

With Harper at the helm, Agellus Hotels is going from strength to strength and is seen as one of the industry’s front runners in the east of the country. In 2015 Agellus Hotels acquired two properties in receivership, former Marco Pierre White pubs, The Lifeboat Inn and The Chequers. What followed was a complete renovation, which, thanks to Harper and his team was executed without a hitch and the two businesses were back up and running in no time.

In 2017 expansion came knocking again and the brand’s most ‘boutique’ property Tuddenham Mill opened five new ‘nooks’, and a spa treatment room. As business continued to build at the two newest additions, expansion was also granted with new bedrooms being added to the inventory.

A major part of the success at Agellus Hotels is its attention to detail and its agile nature in reacting to trends, and this combined with Harper’s savvy approach to business and hotelkeeping, means the brand is on the up for 2018.
