The Fife Arms in Braemar, Scotland, has been named as The Sunday Times Hotel of the Year 2019.
The hotel was selected number one as part of the publication’s list of The Best 100 British hotels, on sale yesterday.
The Fife Arms opened in the Scottish Highlands in December 2018 after a three-year multimillion pound renovation project spearheaded by Swiss owners Iwan and Manuela Wirth.
Despite the launch incurring a handful of delays, the 46-bedroom hotel, complete with spa, cocktail bar, restaurant, pub, library and cinema welcomed its first paying guests last year and has since been widely acclaimed.
Plans for the renovation were first unveiled in May 2017, after Iwan and Manuela – two of the world’s most powerful art dealers, owning Hauser + Wirth galleries and property in Zurich, New York, London, Somerset and LA – acquired the building in 2015 armed with bold ideas to make the hotel one of the top resorts in Scotland.
Shortly after acquisition, Federica Bertolini was appointed general manager at The Fife Arms to prepare the hotel operationally for launch. She joined from the Olga Polizzi-owned Hotel Tresanton where she had been for the 11 years prior.
Other winners in The Sunday Times listing were, The Newt, Best Newcomer of the Year, Grantley Hall, Wellness Hotel of the Year, Rockliffe Hall, Family Hotel of the Year and St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa, Seaside Hotel of the Year.
The list was also split into regions, with the best hotels awarded in central, east, north and west of the country, as well as London, Wales and Scotland.
