Three AA Rosette ‘foodie’ destination in Cumbria goes up for sale

A restaurant with rooms in Cumbria that recently was awarded its third AA Rosette has gone up for sale as its owners look to retire.

The Cottage in the Wood in Whinlatter Forest in the Lake District is the only business located in England’s only mountain forest and boasts views down the valley towards the Skiddaw mountain range.

Current owners, Liam and Kath Berney, who have run the 9-bed property since 2002, now wish to take a step back and retire.

The Cottage in the Wood has established itself as a top foodie destination in Cumbria since the Berneys took over, winning a number of national and regional awards for its restaurant and rooms over the years and featuring in leading guides including the Michelin, Good Food and Good Hotel Guides.

Most recently, the restaurant gained a third AA Rosette and now presents an incoming operator with the chance to further grow and expand on this booming business.

Tom O’Malley, Business Agent at Christie & Co who is handling the sale, comments: “Liam and Kath have put everything into the business over the years and because of this, they have reaped the rewards.

“As a very well-established business with a strong reputation in a unique setting, it would suit anybody with a passion for food and drink: from someone who has worked in the hospitality and catering industry and wants to try their hand at running a successful operation to an existing or multiple operator.”
