Two former teachers swap the classroom for new guest house venture

Two former teachers in Gloucester have swapped their classrooms for a guest house by the sea, taking on a new hospitality venture in Swansea.

Husband and wife Cen and Ali Davies have purchased Tides Reach guest house on Mumbles Road with help from a £180k funding deal with Natwest together with their own capital investment to embark on the new career choice.

Tides Reach is a Victorian town house home to six bedrooms, and has gained a Gold Award from Visit Wales, as well as being a winner of Swansea in Bloom and consistently rates highly on TripAdvisor and

The couple now live in the ground floor bedroom at the property and provide a bed and breakfast experience for guests.

Cen said: “Ali and I have often discussed owning a guest house but never thought it would happen until we visited Devon a few years ago. The owners at the time, who were also former city dwellers, told us how the move was the best thing they ever did, and we never forgot those words.

“We made the decision to up sticks to the coast around Easter time, and since the big move we have never looked back. Thanks to NatWest the purchase went quickly and smoothly and sales so far are doing really well with lots of bookings well into 2018.”
