Young Trailblazers: Kate Levin, general manager, The Capital

Despite no other Power List 2016 entrant making an appearance in this year’s top 50, we had to make an exception for Kate Levin.

As general manager of The Capital in London since 2009, Levin has become one of the UK’s leading lights in hospitality, following in the footsteps of her father David Levin and running the family-owned hotel to huge success. 2016 marked a significant year for The Capital, which has been owned and operated by the Levin family for more than 50 years.

The property continues to grow occupancy and profit year on year and last year the hotel recorded the highest increased score on ‘standards’ by the Institute of Hospitality Inspectors for Hospitality Assured.

Levin was also voted The Independent Hotelier of the Year in 2016 against strong opposition from experienced hoteliers, and was unanimously voted in as chairman of Pride of Britain Hotels by the consortium’s 50 members.

Honest, genuine and a real champion of the people working in the industry, Levin is the definition of a young trailblazer. In 2017, news shook the industry that The Capital and its sister hotel The Levin were to be sold to Warwick Hotels and Resorts, with David Levin saying that ‘difficult decision’ came at the right time. Kate will remain as GM and promises it will be ‘business as usual’ as the ownership shifts and her father takes a step back from the business he has spent the last five decades building. “I think my forte is trying to make people feel comfortable,” she says, “I grew up in a family home that was always trying to make people feel comfortable and was hospitable, generous and honest.”
