Andrew Coney, outgoing general manager of The Hari in London’s Belgravia, has revealed he has been diagnosed with cancer.
Coney announced the news on LinkedIn, writing “I am posting this not for sympathy, but to flag that getting checked like I have means a very early intervention, all very treatable and the confidence in a fix.”
He finished the post with a plea for his network to “get checked!”
In a separate email to Boutique Hotelier, Coney said he wanted this story to be published in order to “encourage cancer awareness” and highlight the importance of regular check-ups.
The veteran hotelier announced he would be leaving his role at The Hari in January after nearly a decade at the helm, taking early retirement and planning to travel the world with his wife.
He is due to leave his position at the 85-bed boutique hotel at the end of the month and will be succeeded by Francesco Sardelli.
Coney joined The Hari as general manager in 2014. During his tenure, he oversaw the transition from a Thompson-managed hotel named Belgraves, to an independent boutique launched in August 2016, which has grown from strength to strength under his guidance.
In an ‘exit’ interview with Boutique Hotelier following the announcement of his departure, Coney reflected on his journey at the hotel.
He told BH: “The privilege of running independent hotels is that you don’t have somebody just telling you what your standards are.
“You have the pleasure of actually getting into the integrity of the product, and feeling that it is really aligned with your values.”
