New hotel and rooftop bar approved for Cardiff

Local councillors in Cardiff have approved plans for a new hotel and rooftop bar in the city centre.

The proposal was submitted by J.B.S.L Holdings to convert a group of buildings on Queen Street into a new 158-bedroom hotel operated by Marriott Courtyard.

Plans include adding a new four-storey rooftop extension to the three-storey building, above ground floor units that are currently occupied by Sainsbury’s, KFC and Creams Café.

The second floors are largely unused.

Once completed, the new ‘four-star high quality’ hotel would also comprise a sky bar, gym, lobby and reception area that would be located on the ground floor of the building.

An officer’s report for the committee said the scheme would bring additional footfall into the city centre.

It added it would provide additional employment options and would make beneficial re-use of underutilised floorspace in the city centre location.

Speaking at the approval meeting, Cllr Jon Shimmin said: “We desperately need more hotels in the city centre, and regeneration down this end of the town centre. I welcome it.”

Earlier this month, plans to transform the former House of Fraser department store in Cardiff city centre into a new hotel also took a step forward.

The proposal will see hotel bedrooms, studio apartments and commercial floorspace created at the Howells of Cardiff building on Trinity Street.
