Salthouse Harbour Hotel in Ipswich has announced plans for £2m investment project to transform its ground floor, create a new spa and launch a sauna boat on the marina.

The hotel, part of Gough Hotels, is marking its 60th year in business this month, and is now planning a three-part transformation, with a complete redevelopment of its ground floor and a luxury waterfront spa to be unveiled next year.

The new restaurant and bar will open late March, expanding the hotel’s social space for dining, while the wet spa will be unveiled in late spring. The spa will comprise saunas, steam rooms, foot spas, treatment rooms and a bespoke wallow pool overlooking the marina.

The sauna boat will then also launch in late spring 2026 with wood-fired heat, cold plunges and waterfront views.

The project will create at least 20 new jobs with roles across spa, bar and restaurant now being advertised for.

Robert Gough, managing director, said: “For 60 years our family has been proud to welcome guests to Suffolk. This anniversary proves we’re not slowing down — we’re stepping up. We know how to look after our guests — but we’ll never stop finding new ways to inspire them.”

Founded in 1965 by Dick and Mary Gough, Gough Hotels remains a family-owned business operating two independent hotels: The Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds and The Salthouse Harbour Hotel in Ipswich.
